PLAYGROUND

Rangitikei District Council will maintain and upkeep the playground as they already do with the two existing playgrounds. Please contact them directly if something is broken in the playground.

What is the playground called?

The new playground is called Te Āhuru Mōwai and means a safe, comfortable and enjoyable space for families and community. Its full bi-line is Ko Te Āhuru Mōwai o Tutaeporoporo. It was given it’s name by by local mana whenua Te Rūnanga o Ngā Wairiki Ngāti Apa and means ‘the safe haven of Tutaeporoporo’.

Tutaeporoporo is a mokai to local Iwi that is seen as a friend and guardian of southern Rangitīkei land, waterways and people.

Te Rūnanga o Ngā Wairiki Ngāti Apa also worked closely with the playground designers to develop art work which tells the tale of Tutaeporoporo and is woven throughout the play space.

What ages or abilities does the playground cater for?

The playground caters for children of all ages and most abilities. There are junior and older areas, swings (including toddler and a high back swing for those with special needs), spinning (including an inclusive carousel for those of diverse abilities), trampolines, water play, instruments, natural features, balancing and more. Plenty for all ages to play on!

Are there any areas to picnic?

Yes, there is seating and picnic areas. There is also a water fountain.

Is there a BBQ at the playground?

Currently there is no BBQ..

is there parking at the playground?

Yes.

why isn’t the playground fenced?

This playground use living fences and hedges.

One of the main reasons for this, is we needed to keep the side of the playground next to the hall open for the RSA ANZAC service and crosses that go on the lawn and for any other community events that are held at the hall.

This playground is for the whole community and we wanted it to be welcoming space. If there is an event at the hall then it can flow into the playground. It's about not separating groups.

There is a fence at the front to stop people running onto the road, and the playground has been designed so the little kids’ area is in the centre of the playground.

A lot of thought and planning has gone into the design of the placement of the play equipment, the flow of the park and the plantings to minimise opportunities to escape. But this is a playground where parents with runners will need to actively supervise. But it will be worth it to see how much the kids enjoy this amazing new space.
